Meet Philip Tucker: University Adviser at Apply UK

When I founded Apply UK earlier this year, the aim was to provide students and families with independent, personalised guidance as they navigate their university choices and applications.

As Apply UK begins to develop, I’m delighted to welcome Philip Tucker as an Associate Adviser.

Phil brings many years of experience in international education and university guidance, working with students from around the world as they consider their options and plan their next steps.

Just as importantly, we share a similar view of what good advice should look like: putting the individual student first, taking the time to understand what they are looking for, and helping them make informed choices rather than directing them towards a particular destination.

Rather than giving you a long introduction to Phil’s career, I thought it would be much more interesting to let him introduce himself in his own words.

Over to Phil…

I’m delighted to be teaming up with Mark at Apply UK. I feel blessed to have had a career which has taken me to all corners of the earth in some amazing international schools. I’ve had a variety of roles and responsibilities over the last 30 years or so, though teaching was always at the core.

In my later years at the British International School Phuket in Thailand, backed by a Certificate in College Counselling from the University of California San Diego, I made the transition to being a full time university and careers counsellor. Although there was a lot to learn it felt like a very comfortable and rewarding change from classroom teacher to counsellor. At heart is that same fulfilment that comes with helping young people become the best version of themselves.

What I particularly love about counselling is the opportunity to sit down and have those interesting, often unexpected conversations where no two students are the same in terms of background and aspirations. I enjoy listening, asking the right questions and helping them make sense of what can sometimes feel like an overwhelming number of choices and competing pieces of advice.

For me, good counselling is often about bringing clarity to that complexity. It’s not about telling a student what they should do, but helping them understand themselves, explore their options and ultimately have an informed and relaxed confidence about the choices they make. This is why I’m very excited to be working with Apply UK.
